While we successfully saved Hall Green Library from closure, a far more dangerous decision is now being pushed through: over 50% of Birmingham libraries — including Hall Green — will be closed on Saturdays.
The Council plans to open some libraries only on alternate Saturdays, with different weekdays each week, creating a chaotic, unreliable service that will push families and children away from the very places designed to support them.
📚 Saturday is the only day many families can visit the library together. For working parents and schoolchildren — especially those without books at home — weekend access is essential for developing a love of reading and building vital literacy skills.
This backwards policy comes at the very moment the Education Secretary has launched the National Year of Reading, calling on families to read together daily. But how are they supposed to do that if the library doors are shut on their only free day?
