Hello all our supporters,

Sorry its been a while since an update. We have been waiting for Council to move forward. We understand its the exact opposite.

At todays 11am Council meeting (you can watch through their web link) we understand that the SEP update will include a proposal to withdrawn from the SEP.

Link to Byron Council meetings and video links

Reasons include;

  • Council may not be able to guarantee that extra venues will not extend trade beyond 12am despite Arsen Pugh's reassurances. The SEP / Liquer Licencing is just too complex for Council alone to guarantee this will not happen.
  • The State is insisting that if the SEP proceeds, then noise restrictions need to be further relaxed.

After a split decsion late 2025, to proceed with the Trial SEP, we now have several councillors who have shifted to a NO SEP position so the SEP could now be quashed for Byron Bay.

If this happens, its great news for everyone, especially those that live nearby.

But everyone still needs to work together to insist on State funding to fix EXISTING issues presented by current venues operating beyond 12am....noise, crime, security, transport, fatigue related road safety, pressures on first responders and emergency workers. This includes issues to be exacerbated by the proposed Merrivale (expanded Cheeky Monkeys) venue going through approvals as we speak. Hundreds of more patrons being activated 12am - 3am and associated issues.

Watch this space and fingers crossed!

Anthony
