So often, the rhetorical question, "What would Jesus do?" is presented to try to bring perspective to a current situation. Since many are pausing to celebrate Christ's birth, it's an appropriate time to ask it once again for an unresolved issue.
It's been nearly a year since I wrote a letter to the editor that sparked a populist crusade. Rumours had surfaced that Wilderness Discovery Resort For The Disabled would close and the Crown land upon which it sits would be sold by the Ontario government to private interests. These rumours were proven true and the campaign to save this unique facility began with an online petition in late January 2015. That petition was delivered to Premier Kathleen Wynne and MPPs Michael Gravelle and Bill Mauro in Thunder Bay on June 15th with nearly 28,000 signers and 700 pages. The government has yet to act upon, nor even address this mandate from their constituency.
Over these many months, the numbers of determined advocates have continued to grow. In just the last week, the followers of the Facebook page, Save Wilderness Discovery Resort For The Disabled, has increased over 10% to more than 3,000. One of them, Arlene King of Thunder Bay, posted a simple two-word message, "I believe!". Simple, yes, but powerful. These tens of thousands of caring, committed citizens still believe, as strongly as ever, that our disability community deserves a place of outdoor sanctuary that provides equality. They believe that selling this one-of-a-kind provincial and national treasure for a one-time gain of just over SIX CENTS per Ontarian is utterly senseless. They believe that our disabled loved ones are challenged enough as it is, and don't need the one place tailored to their needs flattened by a bulldozer and sold to someone who can always buy a vacation anywhere else they wish. They believe that elected officials should serve the will of the people they represent and vote to designate this small, yet essential parcel of THEIR LAND as protected, to continue to serve the needs of our disabled children, brave veterans, and aging parents that lovingly raised us.
The answer to "What would Jesus do?" seems rather obvious. The real questions this Christmas are, "What will your MPP do?". What will Ontario do? What will YOU do to save Wilderness Discovery resort for the disabled? I believe, you will be its saviour.
Merry Christmas,
Kevin Johnson
