For years, the Province of Ontario has been leasing this land to the camp, but the lease is up and now the Province wants to sell the land the camp is built on for more than this not-for-profit organization can afford. “This is truly heartbreaking” said Michael Mantha, NDP MPP for Algoma-Manitoulin. “I’ve received numerous emails and calls; petitions calling to keep camp open have already exceeded 20,000 signatures.” HAGI states their operating costs are roughly $200,000 a year which they have raised through donations and fundraising. “Without government support or grants HAGI has managed to operate this unique camp for years. Unfortunately the well has run dry; HAGI can no longer keep up with operational costs let alone the price tag of $860,000 to purchase this land from the government. The government needs to stand by their commitment to keeping the province accessible to Ontarians with disabilities and not abandon them.” Mantha stated.
