On Sunday April 23rd a boater going at full speed in the area's of Whidbey and Hat islands struck a grey whale in front of three whale watching vessels. The boater was headed straight towards the whales who were spouting directly in front of the boaters line of sight. After the strike the boat stalled out and had to be restarted before the driver took off again before fish and wildlife could respond. The boater has since been identified by fish and wildlife and NAOO. The whale has been located and does have life threatening injury's. It will be several weeks before researches will know if the whale will survive. Whether this was an accident or a deliberate act against this animal the boater needs to be held responsible. Even a simple act of carelessness in whale territory is unacceptable and NAOO needs to enforce a no tolerance policy in regards to violations of the marine mammal protection act.
