The silence of our top elected officials is deafening at a time when communities of color are under attack by those who are spreading hate speech disguised as free speech.

As the top elected leaders in the state of Oregon, we your constituents demand that you arch your shoulders and speak loudly and clearly and with one voice. Oregon will not tolerate hate, hate speech or hate violence!  We demand that you publicly proclaim this to be your position and that you will use every resource available to protect ALL the people in our communities and prosecute those found guilty of violating the law.  We need to hear that you will review and strengthening our hate crimes laws if necessary.  We need to know that walking down any street in Oregon will not lead to name calling, intimidation and organized violence against anyone based on race, birthplace, gender identity, ability or any of the other protected classes of community members.

Black people are being assaulted on public transit; children are being treated disrespectfully by other students and/or faculty; immigrants and refugee community members are fearful of leaving the house.  This is not acceptable in 2017!  We as a community will not accept this as a new norm.  The non-reaction of our top elected office holders has embolden more aggressive actions by KKK and other White Supremacy organized efforts.

We the undersign will not live in fear or silence against hateful organized efforts met to make us afraid of our neighbors.  We expect our elected leaders to know the difference between free speech and hate speech. We demand you send a strong message immediately, no home for hate in Oregon!  Community members of all ethnicities are suffering great harm because of the absence of this message.

Another KKK/White Supremist rally is scheduled on September 10, 2017

We stand together regardless of faith, position, economic or immigration status, gender identity or abilities.  We stand together because we are community!  We want to hear from our stated elected leaders now!
