Sign to help abused men in Canada get shelters
The Issue
Statistics Canada reports that men and women are equally as likely to be abused by a spouse or partner, but in March of 2013 the only known shelter for men fleeing domestic abuse from a partner closed down. Men can be physically abused by both male partners and wives and girlfriends. Objects such as frying pans, baseball bats are used by females and men often feel they can't speak out because they will be seen as less "masculine", laughed at or face legal troubles. If a man protects himself in self defense, he is much more likely to go to prison than a female protecting herself from an abusive male partner.
Please see the following news report about the closing of a shelter for men in 2013 called MASH, here: http://news.nationalpost.com/news/canada/privately-run-shelter-for-male-victims-of-domestic-abuse-forced-to-close-its-doors-due-to-lack-of-funding
Every man in Canada deserves to live safe from abuse without worrying about if they will be attacked by a mentally unstable spouse or partner, and without worrying if he will be imprisoned for protecting himself. Every province in the country needs to have shelters for men, and these shelters need to be funded to the same degree that ones for females are.
Statistics Canada also shows that men are much more likely to commit suicide, In fact the rate for completed suicides among males in Canada is three times higher than that for females (as of 2009). Please see the following Statistics Canada page for more info: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/82-624-x/2012001/article/11696-eng.htm
Together we can make Canada safer for all its citizens, whatever their sex or gender. Thank you for signing!
