It has been 5 months since our last update on the urgent case of Amena and her child. At this time, the family had just received news that Department of Immigration Refugees and Citizenship was expediting her case. This was hopeful news.

Sadly there has been no further correspondence from the department. Amena and her son continue to live in hiding in different locations in Kabul due to threat of persecution, the same threat responsible for the execution of her husband one year ago. Since then, her husband's family in Canada has been calling on the Government of Canada to allow her and her child to come to Canada. Although one year has passed, the lives of Amena and her son are still at grave risk. 

Recently, the family was informed by a staff member of a local Member of Parliament that no action will be taken until Amena and her son are in a second country, as per the existing policy for refugee claimants seeking asylum outside of Canada. This was heart-breaking news for the family. Amena and her child have made every effort to flee Afghanistan, but they have been denied of every avenue to flee to a neighbouring second country.

As supporters of Amena and her son, we are aware that it is a requirement for Amena and her son to flee to a second country for their interview. We are also aware that there are exceptions to this policy based on humanitarian considerations, in particular for vulnerable individuals, such as Amena and her son, who are at risk and in immediate need of help.

Amena's family in Canada is desperate for support. They are requesting that the Department of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship communicate directly with the family and take steps to ensure that Amena and her son are promptly brought to safety in Canada. As supporters, we want to amplify their voices.
