The Covid-19 pandemic has been intolerably cruel to our seniors in Canada. The isolating of seniors living in LTC to save them from Covid-19 has been devastating—infecting and killing them at a rate higher than the rest of the Canadian population and eliminating our beloved elders of what matters most to them — their family and friends above all else. This isolation has gone on far too long and is inhumane to those who truly need additional care, care that used to be provided to them by their families and friends.
In BC, health officials have clarified policies on essential visitors for seniors living in long-term care (LTC) homes to be granted family 'essential' visitor access; to provide them with compassionate care, emotional support and assistance with feeding, mobility or decision-making. Yet this clarification is not making a difference for some families. Isolated seniors in LTC are still being denied 'essential' care access for conditions that they likely qualify for. BUT care homes have been empowered to have a blanket "NO" essential visitor policy and have removed the rights of its residents to essential family assisted care.
It is time to figure out a better way and to grant family 'essential' access to partner-in-care, and to return the human rights to those most needing their rights protected, the seniors living in LTC.
