Pat Sutherland’s research was recently noted in a National Geographic article titled “What you don’t know about the Vikings” (http://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2017/03/vikings-ship-burials-battle-reenactor/). The evidence that Norse artifacts are found in the remains of indigenous occupations in Arctic Canada indicates that relations between Europeans and local inhabitants began long before the colonial period, and that interactions would have involved mutually beneficial trade. This research echoes the perspective being voiced by Indigenous people in Canada today.
