A famous singer once said, "Greed has taken the whole universe, and nobody is worried about their soul". No truer words can be said for the dog fur trade. A minx coat can retail for 10,000 CAD but it comes with a high production cost. A dog fur labeled minx can retail for the same price at half the cost. After a dog is killed and skinned for meat, the fur is sold at a wholesale price to garment factories. The industry generates 12 million annually. A factory owner was quoted as saying “If the garments don’t sell within six months send me an email and I can send labels that say mink.”
The labeling standards are poorly enforced to the point where dog fur is often labeled as imitation faux fur. The so-called "faux fur" is used in everything from coats, gloves, and blankets to stuffed toys.
After the import ban in other countries such as United States, Australia, Switzerland and the European Union, Canada has become one of the leading imports of fur from China. Unless a ban is enacted and stricter labeling regulations passed this horrendous practice will continue.
