19th Dec 2023 at 1028 hours: Today marks the final verdict of the accused Billington Wambui Mwangi.

The defendant, a repeated offender has been sentenced to 30 years imprisonment this morning at the Nyeri High Court for the brutal murder of Sheila Lumumba on April 17th, 2022.  However, the sentencing is subject to a remission that accumulates to a total of 20 years in prison). 

The NGLHRC team of lawyers representing Sheila’s family asked the court for personal belongings belonging to Sheila to be released to the family. 

The judgment for the plaintiff by the court was not well received by those present from the LGBTQ+ community and organizations. 

A joint statement by NGLHRC, INEND and galck+ have explicitly expressed a displease by the court's judgment. Stating that the lenient sentencing does not come close to what Sheila deserved compared to the heinous crimes committed. Not only was it an attack to Sheila but an attack to the dignity and safety of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Alluding of a plan to appeal the court's decision in the future.
