A 19-year-old Florida man accused of setting a caged cat on fire and then feeding the corpse to his dogs will not see the inside of a jail cell. According to the Miami Herald, Roberto Hernandez was sentenced on Friday to 5 years of probation. The judge on the case said she believed Hernandez's defense-that he thought the cat was actually a rabid raccoon that was reportedly attacking animals in the area. Circuit Judge Nashin Sayfie sentenced him to five years of probation plus 100 hours of community service.

This man is walking free to commit inhumane acts like this again because the judge believed his defense. It doesn't take someone with a law degree to figure out that Hernandez clearly did not think it was a rabid racoon, otherwise he would have not fed the remains of a rabid animal to his dogs. Judge Sayfie has failed animals everywhere by setting the precedent that animal abusers in Miami-date county will be able to commit unspeakable acts against defenseless animals with little repercussions. By removing Judge Sayfie from the bench, it will make clear to all judges in the state of Florida that animal abusers must be persecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
