On April 11th, Ibrahim plead guilty to lesser charges for a 'crime' he did not abet, conspire or commit. The justice system works in such a way that 95% of cases that enter the court system plead out. The government quite literally forces your hand to sign a plea deal versus taking a case to trial where the stakes are tremendously higher for a conviction. Thus is our 'system.' We weighed all costs, and seeing as Ibrahim is a brown man with a beard AND Muslim, the case was dead against him before anyone even looked at the facts. For the government, facts are relative. Thus, he signed a plea deal in which he has to serve a total of 5 years, 2.5 already served, 2.5 remaining. The Bureau of Prisons guarantees lesser time based on good behavior, so really Ibrahim is looking at an additional 21 months starting today. Afterwards, he is to be deported since he is only a US permanent resident, not a citizen. It is with a heavy heart we accepted this plea deal, but we believe strongly that this is what is best for our family. Ibrahim has 4 young kids who will still be young children when he is released God willing. He has an elderly mother whom he yearns to be with once again. He has a future. We have a future. And we leave the rest in God's hands.
