Peace everyone,
Words cannot express how deeply grateful my family and I are for the overwhelming outpouring of love and support we’ve received from all of you. When I set out to gather signatures for the petition, I never could have imagined the powerful response it would ignite. Your signatures, your messages of support, and your voices have reminded us that our grief is shared by many, and that my mother’s life meant something to so many more people than we could have ever known.
While the defendant is now in custody, and we know that he will serve time for his actions, it’s important to acknowledge that the sentence offered, though a step in the right direction, is not the justice we sought. Unfortunately, it’s clear that the judge and the prosecutor essentially struck a deal with the defense, one that we, her family, and all of you, her supporters, do not agree with. The sentence given does not come close to reflecting the immense loss and trauma we have endured. Yet, please know that the fight was not in vain.
Because of your voices and your support, we were able to make sure that my mother’s story was heard. The attention this petition brought to the case has made an impact, and I know my mother’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who have signed.
Though the fight for a greater sentence has not resulted in the justice we hoped for, I still feel my mother’s presence in every step we take. She is with us—always. In the kindness of others, in every memory of her, and in the ways we continue to carry her love and wisdom forward.
Thank you again for standing with us. Your support has meant the world to us, and we will never forget it. We continue to grieve, but we also continue to honor my mother’s memory, and we know that we are not alone.
With deep appreciation,
Raven Davis
