Justice for Behati: Oppose Bail for the Accused Rhino Poachers
The Issue
Behati, whose name means "she who brings happiness", was more than just a rhino- she was a living symbol of South Africa's natural heritage. Her tragic death on 22 July 2026, at the hand of poachers, has left a deep wound, not only among conservationists and wildlife lovers, but also in the life of her four-week-old calf, who was left orphaned and is now receiving care at a rehabilitation center. At an age when the calf should have been learning, growing and remaining under the protection of its mother, it has instead been forced to fight for survival without her.
Two individuals have been charged in connection with this matter and are due to apply for bail. We, the undersigned, respectfully urge the court to carefully consider the seriousness of the charges, the devastating impact of rhino poaching on South Africa's endangered wildlife, and the broader interest of justice when determining whether bail should be granted. By signing this petition, we honour Behati's memory, stand in support of her orphaned calf and send a clear message that we value and will continue to defend the wildlife of South Africa and oppose the bail of the two suspects.
