We reacted. We showed up. We voted no but, to be honest, we knew that this wouldn't be over until Boston South declared it's over. Even with the Selectboard now declaring that they will never support a horse track on the 'Woodlot' we know they could support a variety of other uses, most of which would be disastrous for our environment and the residents who live along Long Pond Road.
The latest threat comes from the County again: one of their own, Alex Bezanson, is running for County Commissioner. His signs are appearing all over town, and not coincidentally appearing in front of some of the same residences and businesses where Charlie Bletzer signs turned up in last May's election.
Bezanson is a member of the County Advisory Board, the group of 27 selectboard members and councillors drawn from the 27 communities that make up the County. They are supposed to be a kind of legislature, to the Commissioner's executive board: they are supposed to have leverage over the Commissioners by virtue of being able to approve - or disapprove - their annual budget, including their salaries. Yet somehow they did not stop the Commissioners from sticking the Town of Plymouth with Boston South.
Bezanson appears to be a competent bureaucrat, but as a working member of Plymouth County government, he does not deserve your vote for Commissioner. If you were among the 90% of Plymouth voters who voted against the horse track in the referendum last May, do the same September 6 and vote for Carlos DaSilva for County Commission, who been an outspoken opponent of the County's mischief for many years.
