I am writing to you, once again, with an update on Kristopher Rodriguez, who has two years left to serve in prison, and is now at Lake Correctional Institution in Florida. Unfortunately, his condition is in no way improved since I last wrote to you in December. He is still delusional, and his mother, Gemma Pena—who has valiantly stood by him across the long years of his illness and incarceration—cannot even learn from the prison which medications have been prescribed for him. Nor is she currently allowed to visit him, having last done so in August. Below you will find a sample letter that can be sent to Lake C.I. Warden Sheila Combie. His mental condition is very poor and his mother, Gemma Pena, is struggling to get any information at all about his condition—for instance, which medications have been prescribed for him. Kristopher is a highly intelligent man, whose vast early promise—he was a military honor cadet and outstanding student at an early age—has been endangered by mental illness and treatment in prison. He was stabilized successfully before trial, but in prison has become delusional, at one point not even recognizing his devoted mother, Gemma Pena. He has lost a vast amount of weight and engaged in serious self-harm. I very respectfully ask that you do everything in your power to expedite his recovery, and to allow him visits with his mother.
