A senate committee is currently investigating bank closures in rural and regional Australia. Now is the time for us to stand up for our right to access cash and banking services in our local communities.

This would be a government mandate ensuring that all Australians have reasonable local access to face-face banking services and reasonable local access to physical legal tender Australian notes and coins.
Every Australian needs access to full banking services to participate in the economy, even if they don’t regularly attend a bank branch in person.
Every Australian needs to be able access and use physical notes and coins sometimes, even if they don’t use cash every time they spend money.
Banking networks and the cash distribution system are essential national economic infrastructure.
Everyone needs cash sometimes, even if they often use cards or phones to pay. Everyone needs banking services sometimes even if they don't attend a branch in person every week.
In times of crisis, such as floods, fires and other events leading to outages of power or internet services, cashless payments systems are not available. If the cash distribution system is allowed to wither and die, towns can be left without access to means of paying for goods and services.
Water can’t be delivered to homes if there is no plumbing and taps installed. Increased demand for bottled water has not led to dismantling the national system of tap water to homes and businesses.
Cash can’t be delivered to people in times of crisis if there is no cash distribution system, no bank branches and no ATMs.
1) Physical cash is reliable, particularly in times of crisis.
2) Many people prefer cash for legitimate reasons and some people can only use cash.
3) The availability of physical money underpins confidence in digital money.
So we call for an Australian Banking and Cash Guarantee.
1) All Australians must be able to have reasonable local access to cash and full banking services.
2) All Australians must be able to choose cash when paying for food and essentials at physical retailers.
Without a guarantee of access to full banking services and physical cash and a guaranteed right to use cash to buy food and essentials:
· Local economies are weaker and vulnerable to system outages.
· Many vulnerable people are effectively excluded from the economy.
· Businesses are harder to manage.
