The Biden administration approved the Willow Master Development Plan today, setting the stage for increased health issues for local people and climate impacts that threaten land, water, animals, and communities throughout the Arctic region. Willow will lock in Arctic oil and gas extraction for another 30 years and catalyze future oil expansion in the Arctic.

The fight isn't over – help keep this movement as part of the national conversation.

The project is designed to open the door to the development of billions of barrels of oil over decades across this biologically rich landscape. We need to do more than build a firewall to deal with the climate crisis, we need to put out the fire. Fossil fuels are single-handedly the most damaging contributor to the global climate emergency, especially in the Arctic. The Bureau of Land Management acknowledges that Willow will further pollute and cause health harms to local people, including to our food access, cultural traditions, and physical and mental health.

The true cost of the Willow project is to the land and to animals and people forced to breathe polluted air and drink polluted water. While out-of-state executives take in record profits, local residents are left to contend with the detrimental impacts of being surrounded by massive drilling operations and high cost of living, especially with price-gouged gas prices. Our fight has been long and also it has only begun. We will continue to call for a stop to Willow because the lives of future generations depend on it.

As we’re preparing to challenge this decision in court, it is imperative that we keep Willow as part of the national conversation. I ask you to continue to stand with us, the millions who know we need to make different choices for our communities and our climate.
