Greetings supporters, as you know removing the Columbus statue was one of our goals, but it's fate must be monitored as well to ensure whatever happens next, is thoughtful and considerate of our indigenous brothers and sisters, and honors actual history and not a white supremacist fairy tale.

On 01/15/2021, the long awaited Special Committee for Commemorative Works met for the the first time via Zoom, and chose their chairman Ray Rickman.
They agreed to meet a second time on 02/12/2021 at noon, where they anticipate they will discuss the Columbus statue and it's fate. It was unclear if a resolution will be made at that time, or if subsequent meetings will be needed.

I will monitor the City of Providence open meeting portal in case there is a change to the meeting date and time, since it is not yet listed there.

It is important to remember that the Special Committee is advisory ONLY. And they advise the board of Parks Commissioners who will make the final decision on the statue. I plan on attending the next meeting of Parks Commissioners with public comment, to again request that they commit to following the recommendations of the Special Committee and if not I will ask that they recuse themselves from the decision. I will in particular be demanding that councilman Nicolas Narducci recuse himself, as he has stated that he is biased and unwilling to be impartial or listen to any other perspectives than his own. I will post the time and date of the next Park Commissioners meeting when it becomes available as well.
