As we strive to build support for this campaign, we must remember why we are doing it. Petitions rely on supporters to persuade those in power to make change. However, in amassing signatures for maximum impact, we can easily be distracted from what really matters. In a world preoccupied with self-love, this campaign focuses on caregiving and affirms our need for one another. True, signing petitions attaches our names to causes with political goals, but it accomplishes more than that. This petition affirms our faith in one another and demands social programs to better support caregivers. It assumes that caregivers are more than a “human resource” having economic benefit. With value beyond measure, caregiving is a value in itself. For these reasons, it is important to acknowledge the comments of supporters who did more than sign this petition by taking the time to tell their stories. Today there are over 600 comments well worth reading. They ask us to highlight the pleas of caregivers who desperately need a lifeline. We need to hear their cries and empathize with them -- feel their pain in struggling with daily challenges, and share their joy in caring for loved ones. Tending to the weak, sick and dying, is never easy. Still, only those of us who have met this awesome challenge can know how we miss our loved ones -- and how much we would give to spend one more day with them enriched by the experience. Therefore, we must thank all who have commented on this petition and told their stories. Their words touch us and encourage our appreciation of all they do – even when it seems we will not give them the time of day. And thanks also to all supporters for spreading the word and sharing this petition across Canada. With more than 8 million caregivers today, and as many receiving care, we have a deep well of potential supporters! Let’s treasure the generosity of caregiving as we continue inviting Canadians of good will to sign and share this petition widely. Salvatore (Sal) Amenta
