Hello Everyone,
I am hoping you can lend just a little bit of time and support to help the endangered
Southern Resident Killer Whale clan which was decimated by the captivity industry decades ago.
During the 60's and 70's the captivity industry stole many young orcas from J,K and L pods in the Salish Sea to fill their
tanks and make Shamu a household name.
"Beginning in the late 1960s, the live-capture fishery for oceanarium display removed an estimated
47 whales and caused an immediate decline in Southern Resident numbers.4 The population fell an
estimated 30% to about 67 whales by 1971. By 2003, the population increased to 83 whales.
Due to its small population size, we listed this segment of the population as endangered
under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 2005 and designated critical habitat in 2006."

We now have 1 less orca than when they were endangered. AN entire generation which would have
repopulated was instead dying in captivity and only 1 remains from those captures.
Her name is Tokitae AKA Lolita. Today her family is dying of starvation. They simply do not
have enough Chinook salmon to sustain them much less help them recover.
The Southern Residents almost exclusively feed on Chinook Salmon which are also endangered
and they are dammed up in Idaho on the lower Snake river which feeds into the Columbia Basin
which is where the Southern Residents gather when they are not 'residing' in the Salish Sea.
A couple of weeks ago another precious female was declared missing and is presumed dead,
another mother is showing signs of starvation and is nursing calf, if she dies, the calf will most
likely die as well.
The Federal Government has spent ~ a Billion USD tax dollars on salmon recovery but so far has refused
to consider breaching dams. A Federal judge recently threw out the latest salmon recovery plan and
now the Federal Government wants 5 more years to come up with yet another plan. These orcas do not
have 5 more years to wait for more studies, they need salmon now.
The good new is that the President can issue an executive Order to breach those dams but Washington State
Officials need to engage and speak out to encourage President Obama to breach the dams.
We are their last hope for survival. And these officials need to hear from us.
They need to know that we want whales.
Please join us for a phone storm and tweeting event tomorrow, Friday the 16Th and
lend your voice to help these victims of captivity.
