WILLIAMS DAM needs to be removed, or at least bypassed by a fishway, because for over 100 years it has been blocking the spawning migration of the LAST EXISTING population of a genetically-unique strain of lake sturgeon in the ENTIRE Ohio River drainage. "...the [East Fork] White River population may be the most suitable source population for future lake sturgeon reintroductions throughout the Ohio River drainage... the White River population appears to be a reservoir of unique genetic information and reintroduction may be a necessary strategy to ensure the persistence of this important genetic lineage." (Drauch, Fisher, Latch, Fike, Rhodes Jr., Conservation Genetics, October 2008.) Instead of being able to spawn in their historical range, the remaining lake sturgeon mass below the dam and drop their eggs in the vicinity. ONE disaster, such as severe drought or a chemical spill, could wipe them out completely! Federal law was gutted and evaded in order to ram the Williams Dam hydropower good ol' boy deal through, and it was a secretive and sleazy process from the get-go, culminating in Congressman Todd Young's intervention, when he used and abused his influence on behalf of cronies in Lawrence County.
