This shelter has saved lives.

These words will stay with me the rest of my life and it’s what a shelter user told me on my first shift there. And this shelter is about to close at the end of month??!!. Why would our amazing City turn its back on the 150+ people who use this shelter everyday?

Why Our House for the People exists. Anyone who passes through the Liverpool City centre will have seen the epidemic levels of homelessness right now. The Shelter was opened temporarily in a redundant building (Kingsway House) in December to keep people out of the cold over what turned out to be a very very cold & wet Christmas and New Year. The Kingsway building is owned by a private business who have also provided two hot meals a day; who’s leader thought he could help the homeless for a few months at least. (By the way I’ve never met this man or any of his leadership team).

Currently the shelter is staffed by volunteers from the Liverpool community (like myself) and by the homeless themselves. On a daily basis beds and shelter are provide for 50-60 people and around 150 people visit for hot food and drinks. Over the short time that Our House for the People has been open – lives have been CHANGED. Regular users are getting help with clothing, addictions and even finding jobs and homes.

It is reported that city centre crimes levels have improved. Our House for the People users regularly carry out litter picks in the local area. This benefits everyone.

Our House for the People has been able to compliment other council provided services in the city and anybody who has visited or used the shelter will agree it is achieving great things every day.

By signing this petition you are joining a growing voice of support across our amazing City that these people matter and they can be supported and we can make a difference. This is a journey – not a destination – we have to keep Our House for the People open and continue the amazing work it has achieved in a very short space of time.

The bottom line is – if Our House for the People closes – 50-60 people go back to sleeping in doorways and on cold pavements every night. …. We can’t let this happen.

Thanks for reading! I hope you will sign and show Liverpool City Council that we need Our House for the People. Lets work together to make it happen.
