First off, I would like to thank you for the LWOP commutations while you have Governed California. Also, for passing the law in regards to juvenile lifers to receive a the chance of parole after serving 25 years. It is the first step of many to rehabilitate offenders and correct the overcrowded prison system.
I am writing this letter and submitting a petition on behalf of my husband Stephen Davis. Unfortunately, he did not fall into the 'juvenile' category since his alleged crime was committed a few months after his 18th birthday. Steve has been an exemplary inmate throughout the time he has spent behind concrete and bars. He currently 2 classes away from 4 college degrees. Stephen earned the opportunity to speak at the 1st TedX event at his facility. The impact of his talk was so powerful, he received a standing ovation. He was asked to participate in the 2nd event held a few months ago. Steve has received countless certificates for his rehabilitation as well as self-help efforts ranging from anger management, behavior modification & saving the lives of 2 fellow inmates.
I strongly urge that you give Stephen the same opportunity you have so generously given to other young first-time offenders. Stephen could be proof of the state of California's ability to 'rehabilitate' it's prison population as well as decrease the inmate numbers and overcrowded conditions throughout California's facilities.
