Plastic straws pose a serious risk to our planet.
These straws are not biodegradable, and commonly end up in the ocean. Here, they wash up on beaches and fragment due to waves and radiation from the sun. At the rate plastics are currently entering the ocean, there will be more plastics in the ocean than fish in 2050. Additionally, sea creatures are ingesting the plastic particles and introducing plastics into the food chain that we are a part of.
Plastic straws are unnecessary and wasteful. There are numerous alternatives, such as biodegradable, paper straws or reusable straws.
By making straws available only upon request, people will simply have to say no to straws to make a difference. By not completely banning plastic straws, they will still be available for people who require them due to health issues.
We must act now to change the course we are headed on. Plastic straws are an easily eliminated plastic product, and it is time to say no to them.
