Start acting to raise awareness of the dangers of Shisha as well as regulate the Shisha market and prevent a rise in Shisha lounges across the UK.

The Issue

Shisha is extremely misunderstood by smokers. There’s a misconception that Shisha is less harmful than cigarettes, and when I first heard of Shisha… I was even told that it was healthy and ‘good for your health’ - Now, I see that as a laughable comment…But one that’s very dangerous in the hands of those that are using it as an excuse to smoke Shisha.

The World Health Organization two years ago warned that an hour of Shisha smoking is as harmful as smoking 100 cigarettes. The cancer-causing toxins combined with the carbon monoxide poisoning risk of burning coal can lead to an array of health problems ranging from heart disease to stomach ulcers, or even stomach cancer as well as cancer to the lungs, mouth and throat. There’s also a great risk of asthma and other respiratory disease. 

Not to mention the risks of catching herpes, common-flu, TB and other contagious disease associated with the sharing of Shisha equipment - pipes in particular. 

There’s also a massive effect, socially, for Shisha smokers. Regular smokers can feel fatigue throughout the day, as well as feel a loss of stamina and energy throughout the day. This is leaving aside the actual cost of Shisha which ranges between £10 to £100 +. 

The government need to start raising awareness of the dangers...
