One of the things that happens when someone you care about is diagnosed with blood cancer and told they need a stem cell transplant, is that suddenly the world seems filled with new appeals showing more and more people who are desperately searching for that life saving match. Every day seems to bring a new face through Facebook or Twitter who needs a donor so much. In the last few days, I've heard about Huntley who is looking for an African/ Caribbean match, 11-year-old Evie who is looking for a second transplant (#DONOR4EVIE) and Mel from Leeds whose mixed heritage means that it's even more of a challenge to find that match (#MATCH4MEL). There are many, many more world wide. It breaks our hearts that currently only 60% of patients can find the best possible match from a stranger, and this drops dramatically to 20% if you're a patient from a black, Asian or ethnic minority background. Ruby may still be struggling with her recovery and dealing with the financial concerns etc. that this has brought - but she has also beaten the odds and I know she feels very blessed. Widening the number of hospitals that offer cord blood collection would do more to ensure that the register's diversity reflects the population of the UK. This is why we began this petition and why we'd urge you to keep signing and sharing! I'd also like to say thank you so much for those who have donated and shared the Justgiving page - we are already at 33% of our goal! Every penny helps Ruby and her family so that they can continue to concentrate on the things that matter. It helps them to keep Ruby's Mum with them for as long as possible which is so important to them at the moment. If you are able to donate then you still can at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/team-ruby-1
