Unbelieveably, it seems the Labour NEC plans to meet this weekend and NOT to discuss Brexit.
This is my email just sent to Jeremy Corbyn / Shadow Ministers in the Shadow Brexit team etc.
Please send one too, if you can: jeremy.corbyn.mp@parliament.uk
... It is beyond belief that the Labour Party NEC plans to meet this weekend, but not to discuss Brexit. They must. What will it take to make [Jeremy Corbyn / Labour] understand that Brexit is an appalling betrayal of Labour values and of ‘hardworking’ citizens?
Even if we put aside – as we should not – the damage already being inflicted on our 3 million non-UK European fellow citizens, and even if we could somehow explain away the economic devastation likely to be visited on the most in need - why take that huge risk? - two other vital difficulties still remain:
1. On the party political front, reports make it very clear that Labour cannot win a general election without the support of Remain voters; there just aren’t enough Labour Leavers to do it; [As John Curtice reports: “ Labour’s advance (in GE 2016) was strongest amongst those who were keenest on staying in the EU and those who were least concerned about immigration.” http://natcen.ac.uk/blog/who-voted-labour-in-2017 ]
And, much more seriously (please note) from the perspective of actual principles
2. Most Leavers want to ‘bring back’ grimly inhumane practices such as capital punishment; indeed, that wish is what most clearly distinguishes Leavers from Remainers. [Fabian Society report: “.. the probability of voting Brexit rises from around 20 per cent for those most opposed to the death penalty to 70 per cent for those most in favour. Wealthy people who back capital punishment back Brexit. Poor folk who oppose the death penalty support Remain.” http://www.fabians.org.uk/brexit-voters-not-the-left-behind/ ]
Like many others long-time active in the Labour Party, I see absolutely nothing in these and several similar analyses to support the current Labour equivocation over Brexit. Brexit is a thoroughly unpleasant and unethical proposition.
StopBrexit is the only possible way forward for any UK progressive political party. Along with the PLP, the NEC must consider and adopt such a stance this coming weekend....
... and you might also mention the huge question mark over children's rights: https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/media/livacuk/law/european-childrens-rights-unit/The,potential,implications,of,Brexit,for,Child,Protection.pdf
Thanks for whatever you can do,
Hilary
