Create a shadow minister for the well-being of men and boys
The Issue
In the UK like many other countries there is a false assumption that men and boys are doing fine. In truth males are dying younger, falling behind in education, killing themselves more often, having more accidents at work, becoming homeless more often, experiencing more problems with addiction, losing contact with their children more often, ending up in prison more often and becoming the victim of violence more often. In the UK we have merged the roles of minister for women's affairs and minister for equalities. This means that we are from the top giving our whole society the false message that only females can suffer inequalities arising from their gender. This one-sided message is damaging for young men growing up in the UK and for all of us, male and female alike. It denies the problems facing men and boys and makes it harder for them to seek help when help-seeking is already something that males feel under pressure not to do. We cannot expect men to seek help for their problems if our very institutions reinforce the idea that such problems do not exist. We need a level playing-field on gender for all people, male and female alike. The new opposition, led by Jeremy Corbyn who is focussed on a fair society for all, is best placed to argue for this important change.
