Unresolved murder in Burwell Nebraska
The Issue
The first week of 2014, 31 year old Christopher Melling and his 3 year old daughter were found dead in their home, both with gun shot wounds to their heads. The local county attorney immediately called this a murder/suicide before the investigation had even begun. Later it was found that the State of Nebraska had no forensic lab and investigation reported non sufficient gun powder residue and fingerprints on the sawed off shotgun that was used. The night before the deaths occurred, Christopher's wife had been jailed for 3rd degree domestic abuse. Her father bailed her out of jail 3 hours before the deaths occurred. The county attorney refused family members from seeing the bodies and also refused allowing them the pictures. We believe the reason for this refusal was because it would be evidence that would prove this was not a murder/suicide because of the distance the gun would have been from the victims face. It was also clear that the gun was found laying upon Christopher's body which would be exceptionally unusual for a sawed off shot gun to have such limited recoil. There are many unresolved problems with the county attorney's determination but the most glaring one was the last call on Christopher's phone at 11:30 the night he died. It was a call to the emergency 911 system that was not recieved by them.
Please sign this petition so that we can reopen this case and discover who pulled the trigger on Christopher and Aimee Melling. I am Christopher's mother and Aimee's grandmother. Thank you.
