Stop monopolizing coverage of The Olympic Games in the United States
Stop monopolizing coverage of The Olympic Games in the United States
The Issue
A quick review of current social media confirms that many people are fed up with NBC's coverage of The Olympic Games for a number of important reasons. However, it seems that NBCSports chairman, Mark Lazarus, claimed those who are fed up are just a "very loud minority" (http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012/aug/02/nbc-criticism-olympics-coverage-changes?newsfeed=true). He also stated that NBC's ratings have been successful despite the criticism throughout online social media. Yet, high ratings mean nothing since NBC is the ONLY network showing the Olympics in the United States. Therefore, viewers have no choice but to watch the Games on NBC, consequently boosting the ratings.
Not only has NBC limited people living in the U.S. from watching the events live on television, but they also “pick and choose" which events, athletes, and countries to show. While it is logical to focus a little more attention on Team USA, NBC's coverage of The Olympics appears to be extremely biased toward Team USA. However, the United States of America is home to a very large number of people from around the world who would likely want to watch their home countries competing, too.
NBC also spends an unnecessary amount of time showing things other than competition including commercials, interviews, long back stories of a select few athletes, and U.S. athletes stretching and warming up or cooling down while other countries compete. That time could be used more efficiently to show more competition.
We, the people, are extremely disappointed and yes, even angered, by NBC's coverage of the 2012 Olympic Games and do not want NBC to monopolize the coverage in 2016. Please sign this petition if you agree and help show Mark Lazarus that we are, in fact, a very loud MAJORITY.
