Open Port of Entry at Lajitas Texas

My name is Jeff Haislip. my family and I have been residents of Lajitas/ Terlingua area for over thirty years. Lajitas has always been a thriving border community, with residents and trade across both sides of the Rio Grande. Lajitas lies at the best river crossing between Presidio and Del Rio, along a well known road used by Indians, traders, and local merchants from both sides of the river. The Lajitas Trading Post was established in 1899 by H.W. McGuirk, along with a church, school, and post office. Paso Lajitas, Chihuahua, grew up with Lajitas, Texas, and until recently had an active community, primarily of families who worked at the Lajitas Resort.
The traditional informal river crossing of Lajitas was closed May 10, 2002, after 9/11. This closure has severed families, and prevented residents of Paso Lajitas who are also lawful residents of the United States, from living at home. It makes no sense to have to drive 4 hours from Paso Lajitas to Presidio to Lajitas, when it used to be accomplished in five minutes. Attached to this letter is a video, of those persons who are interested in re-opening the Lajitas crossing, so that they may continue to see their families, work, and trade. Re-opening the Lajitas Crossing will re-establish the cross border community of Lajitas/ Paso Lajitas.
Also attached is a petition signed by residents, each of whom respectfully request that the steps be taken to re-open the Lajitas crossing. All we request is a legal crossing, with an inspection station, only open during certain hours, which would also allow for lawful entry into the United States.
We believe in Texas/Mexico trade, tourism, and reuniting families. We respectfully request that the process be started to re-open the Lajitas crossing to allow for lawful entry by boat ferry from Paso Lajitas to Lajitas.
