On 12 May 2024, Catalonia has an opportunity of the century: if the Catalans put their trust in Carles Puigdemont, the legitimate President of Catalonia who was ousted in October 2017 in an unconstitutional coup d'état, the Catalan nation will be able to follow the path it took on 1 October 2017 to its end and regain the freedom it lost in 1714 by exercising its human right to self-determination.
If it is not Carles Puigdemont, but a coalition consisting of several parties that elects Spain's ‘governor’ Salvador Illa as President of Catalonia, it is doubtful whether the Catalan Republic, which has already been proclaimed in accordance with international law, will actually be established. In this case, President Puigdemont would withdraw from politics and Spain would probably further expand its rule over its most lucrative colony.
The people of Catalonia are facing the most important decision since the fateful 1 October 2017: every abstention, every blank or invalid ballot paper will be a vote against Catalonia and for Spain. Never before has it been so important that all those Catalans who fundamentally reject the Spanish occupying power and the elections organised within the framework of its legality nevertheless exercise their right to vote and show the world that Catalonia, under the leadership of President Carles Puigdemont, is striving for freedom and sovereignty!
The elections on 12 May 2024 are no ordinary elections. The Catalan people are facing a historic choice between freedom and servitude, between President Carles Puigdemont and Salvador Illa, a functionary of one of the three parties that broke the Spanish constitution in October 2017 and organised a coup d'état from above, in the course of which, for the first time since Hitler, a freely and democratically elected parliament was unlawfully declared deposed in Western Europe, members of the government were also unlawfully imprisoned and then, violating the Spanish Code of Civil Procedure and without sufficient legal basis, sentenced to long prison terms in a show trial.
It is not a question of choosing left-wing, liberal or right-wing conservative positions. It is not important whether you like President Puigdemont's Junts party as a party or not. It is irrelevant whether you find fault with one or another functionary of the Junts party.
It's about the whole thing! It's about the freedom and independence of Catalonia! What is at stake is that in the eyes of the world, the President of Catalonia will once again be the one who is still the legitimate President of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the one who has shown like no other that he is capable of standing up to the colonial power of Spain, the one whom Spain fears and persecutes with all its might like no other Catalan politician.
Anyone who votes for ERC, for example, cannot know in the current situation whether they will be in favour of the establishment of the Catalan Republic after the election or whether they will make a pact with Salvador Illa and Spain. It takes courage to vote this time in such a way that it is not party programmes, but simply the question of how to vote in order to elect President Puigdemont that will be decisive for an election decision that confirms President Carles Puigdemont in his office as legitimate President of the Generalitat, so that he becomes visible to the whole world as the legitimate leader of the Catalan people on their way to the long-awaited freedom. It requires historical foresight to vote this time, if necessary against one's own party-political preference, so that the tangible historical turning point becomes a reality and Carles Puigdemont is confirmed in his office as President of the Catalan nation.
The old and new fascists and nationalespañolistas have the choice between three ultra-right parties, PP, Ciudadanos and Vox. They will probably all go to the polls and cast their votes primarily in favour of the PP and Vox. However, for all those who strive for freedom, the rule of law and a sovereign democratic republic of Catalonia, for all those who want to end the centuries-long occupation of Catalonia by the colonial power Spain, for all those who long for the economic upturn of a Catalonia freed from its shackles and colonial exploitation, there is only one candidate in this election who has the central interest of the entire Catalan nation and its future as such in helping him to a historic election victory: President Carles Puigdemont!
