After the Spanish state had in the recent past already monitored the then President of the Catalan Parliament, Roger Torrent, the Minister Jordi Puigneró, the former Minister Ernest Maragall, the Catalan MP Sergi Miquel and the former Catalan MP Anna Gabriel with the spying programme Pegasus of the Israeli NSO Group, Catalan exiled president Carles Puigdemont, a member of the European Parliament, and his entourage have also been spied on using an Israeli spy programme sold exclusively to governments by the Candiru company. A group of researchers from Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto (Canada) has so far been able to identify around one hundred people worldwide who have been victims of state espionage attacks using the programme called 'Devils Tongue' by the Microsoft company. The only known politically active victim in Western Europe so far is Catalan President Carles Puigdemont, who was illegally ousted by Spain. Other victims of the spying programme can be found in Turkey, Lebanon, Yemen, Iran and Singapore.

Although Microsoft claims to have closed the security hole in the meantime, it cannot be ruled out that a newer version of 'Devils Tongue' could already be active via another Windows security hole.
If it turns out that the spying programme 'Devils Tongue' was used by Spain against Carles Puigdemont during his mandate as a Member of the European Parliament, this would be an outrageous affront to the European Parliament and the entire European Union, which should not remain without consequences. All Spanish politicians responsible for this espionage scandal would have to resign immediately and the competent public prosecutor's office would have to start criminal investigations against all those who ordered the illegal spying on a Member of the European Parliament, carried it out or knew about it as functionaries and officials of the Spanish state without immediately bringing these facts to the attention of the competent public prosecutor's office.
For a long time, the European Union remained silent and only looked on. Now it is time to defend the European Parliament and the democratic principle in Europe against abuses by the Spanish state!
