Spain's deep state prepares a massive blow against Catalonia — conflict threatens to escalate further
The leaders of the Spanish legislature, executive and judiciary have for years in the Catalan crisis been violating international law which is binding for Spain and thus also the Spanish constitution, according to which they must adhere to the Spanish legal system. The number of violations of law and human rights by representatives of the Spanish state is legion. A criminal prosecution of this obvious abuse of office and power does not take place so far and will probably only be possible one day before an International Spain Tribunal.
The paramilitary Guardia Civil, founded in the 19th century, was rebuilt under the criminal rule of the mass murderer Francisco Franco according to the example of the German SS and used for the suppression of politically dissenting people and in particular the non-Spanish-speaking peoples of Spain. In 1943, the bundle of rods of a Roman lictor was inserted into their coat of arms as a fascist symbol. The motto of the German SS was «Our honour is faithfulness», that of the Guardia Civil «honour is my motto». The ruthless brutality of the 80,000 or so troops, who performed both police and military duties and were very well equipped, repeatedly came to light both under the Franco dictatorship and in the decades that followed. According to the Guardia Civil's self-image, the torture of prisoners is apparently well compatible with their sense of honour.

On October 1, 2017, barbarian thugs of the Spanish Guardia Civil beat down peaceful Catalan voters in a way that would never have happened in a democratic constitutional state. The referendum of 1 October 2017, illegally declared illegal by the so-called Spanish Constitutional Court, did not violate international law, nor was it a punishable offence in Spain, since under the Spanish Penal Code the holding of referendums in Spain is not a criminal offence and neither alleged nor actual constitutional violations can constitute a criminal offence that is not enshrined in the Penal Code. The huge, barbaric and brutal action of the Civil Guard and the National Police against the Catalan people was disproportionate and illegal. Over a thousand peaceful voters were injured — some very seriously — by Spanish police on 1 October 2017. One man had to be resuscitated, another was shot in the eye by the police. To this day, the victims of police violence and the Catalan people are waiting in vain for the Spanish Prime Minister to apologise for this illegal, disproportionate state violence.
Before the announcement of the injustice judgments of the Spanish injustice justice on 14 October 2019, General Pedro Garrido, Commander-in-Chief of the Spanish Guardia Civil in Catalonia, declared that the members of his troop would do it again, i.e. once again beat up and seriously injure peaceful Catalan demonstrators exercising their fundamental right to freedom of expression and assembly guaranteed by the Spanish Constitution and the United Nations Human Rights Pacts, as well as by the European Convention on Human Rights. He literally quoted the prominent political prisoner Jordi Cuixart, who was sentenced to many years in prison for exercising his fundamental and human rights without having committed any recognisable crime, as saying «Ho tornarem a fer!» - «We will do it again!»
And they did it again. The Spanish police units once again attacked peaceful demonstrators and Catalans who had already been arrested and unleashed unprecedented violence. Masked police officers, who had mixed among the demonstrators, ensured that the violence escalated further. Arbitrary arrests and unlawful treatment of those arrested were also part of the programme of a police force which mistreats and terrorises peaceful citizens on behalf of the state. Serious injuries on the Catalan side (blown eyes, destroyed testicles) were the result. Police terror and repression in Catalonia continue to this day. The Guardia Civil and the Policía Nacional behave like representatives of a colonial power and treat the Catalans not as citizens, but as a subdued people of lesser rights. An unprecedented hatred of everything Catalan and an anti-Catalanism, which is quite comparable to the anti-Semitism of the German SS, manifest themselves. The members of the Guardia Civil who are guilty of disproportionate use of force are not representatives of a constitutional state, but brutal thugs who should be brought to justice and sentenced for the crimes they have committed. The great brutality of the Spanish police and the extent of the violence and repression against the Catalan people make it appropriate, even at this stage, to speak of a crime against humanity, committed by the Spanish State.
Worse is to be expected. At the end of October 2019, Carlos Lesmes, President of the Spanish Supreme Court and the Spanish Control Council of the Judiciary, urged the Spanish Prosecutor General, María José Segarra, and the Armed Forces High Command to take an iron hand against the Catalan sovereignty movement. Under Orwellian twisting of the facts he tried to pretend thereby that the past acting of the Spanish state is law-conformal and does not offend against international and Spanish right. He rhetorically quoted Seneca and Sophocles, among others, in his attempt to give the unlawful action of the Spanish judiciary and executive the appearance of a supernatural legality. His announcement that those who «attack the Spanish democracy with irrational blindness» in a «brutal way» would pay for the consequences of their actions could, of course, be realized in a different way than he meant, since in his words he accurately characterized the actions of the Spanish police, the Spanish judges, the Spanish government as well as the Spanish parliament and senate and crimes against humanity could one day also be punished by an international court.
As already from a speech of October 2017 of the Spanish king Philipp VI, who was no longer recognized by the Catalan people, a clear request to the Spanish generals to prevent a sovereignty of Catalonia with all available means — thus also military if necessary — can be heard from the words of the supreme court president. The spirits conjured up here may not only lead to the militarization of a political conflict, but may also lead to the assumption of power by the Spanish military and the Guardia Civil. The ‘deep state’ of Spain is still in control, even if it is now the sons and grandchildren of the fascists who are at the controls and levers of power. The oppression of the Basque, Galician and Catalan peoples was and is the raison d'être of the Spanish state. In the light of Spain's international obligations and the international law which is binding on Spain, it will not be possible to continue for long despite all the violence and repression. Just like the Danube monarchy and the Soviet Union, the multi-ethnic state of Spain will also break up, because it is the country in which a ‘superior nation’ that celebrates every year the day of the Spanish race (!) as a national day, seeks to rule over the other peoples of Spain.
And Europe is silent and watching! What a shame!
