The first time I called an elected official asking for change my heart was pounding so hard I couldn't hear the dial tone. When I heard the person on the other end of the line my breathing quickened and my mouth felt dry. I blurted out what was written on the phone script all in one breath and immediately hung up. It was over in less than 2 minutes. The second time got easier. The third time I didn't need the script because I knew what I was feeling in my heart.
I get it, making phone calls can be intimidating. Let me assure you, however, that they are effective.
It can be easy for the JMU Foundation to ignore our digital movement but they can't ignore the phones ringing off the hook. They can't ignore people flooding their voicemail with messages denouncing Warren Coleman and insisting that he resign. If we want to be heard then we have to speak. Below are some tips on making phone calls to make it easier.
- If you mention that you are a donor, they have to listen to your entire call. If you've ever donated even a $1 to JMU, say that upfront to ensure that they don't hang up.
- Mention your connection to JMU. Whether you're a current student, staff, faculty member, alum, or even just a concerned community member, your voice matters.
- Call again or leave a message. We've had reports of the person on the other side hanging up as soon as we bring up Coleman. If they think we'll backdown, they're dead wrong! Call again until you make sure you're heard.
- Take your time. If phone calls give you anxiety, don't do them all at once. Spread them out over the day.
- Ask questions. As of this moment neither JMU nor the Foundation have responded to our demands. When calling, ask that they address the community they are meant to serve.
- Follow up. If you've already called, emailed, shared the petition, and started dialogues with your friends about the movement, follow up! Find other ways to reach out to JMU and the Foundation through social media.
