Hello everyone, In recent weeks, we have seen the #MeToo movement become a national battle cry. Men in positions of power who have been allowed to harass and assault women with impunity are now being held accountable for their actions. This is our watershed moment. And not just for women, but for all survivors. The status quo of blaming, shaming, and shunning survivors is now being shifted to the perpetrator and the predator – where it belongs. As with any grassroots movement, there is always a countermovement. There are those who do not want things to change. There are those who want survivors to stay silent. There are many tactics that people use to bully and terrorize women into silence – one of the most egregious is rape threats. As a gang-rape survivor who refuses to be silent, I receive these threats and I know others do too. I also know that Twitter does not always handle these threats appropriately and there are women being driven off the platform due to these threats. #MeToo is an important campaign that has empowered women and survivors to come forward with their stories and we are finally seeing positive change. We must protect this campaign and send a clear message to those who would attempt to silence us – that they can’t. It’s time for Twitter to shut down accounts that threaten rape. Mute, block, and temporary suspensions are not enough. If users want to be on the Twitter platform they need to know that rape threats will NOT be tolerated. Please continue to share this petition – change.org/stoprapethreats – and help me show Twitter that this is a change their users want. Thank you! Brenda Tracy
