No To Sainsburys started this petition to Islington council

Sainsburys are looking to open a new supermarket in the former Highbury Vale police station on Blackstock Road in Highbury.

As part of this process, Sainsburys are seeking planning permission for change of use of part of the building from D2 (gymnasium) to A1 (retail). This is contrary to the express wishes of local people which were carefully considered by Islington Council when permission to convert the building was first granted.

Sainsburys are also applying for an off licence to sell alcohol in an area already saturated with off licences, and subject to significant population surges during Arsenal home games.

In view of the strong concerns expressed by local residents, and given that time is now of the essence, the three Highbury East ward councillors have set up this e-petition to help reinforce the message to the Islington planning and licensing committees.

We the undersigned oppose:

1. The planning application for change of use from D2 to A1 at the former Highbury Vale police station.

2. The granting of a further licence for the off sales of alcohol in an area already saturated with on and off sales premises.

We respectfully request that Islington Council take account of our petition when considering Sainsburys planning and licensing applications in respect of the former Highbury Vale police station.
