TfL say:-
"(W)e do acknowledge the level of concerns about the lack of green man crossings at the location...
(W)e’re working on a discrete proposal to provide pedestrian crossings at this junction. Although delivering a green man facility seems straightforward, it has proven difficult to achieve without generating significant local impacts. The scope of our design work therefore includes the Liverpool Road junction where pedestrian issues also are in need of attention.
A previous proposal to introduce pedestrian crossings here in 2010 included a number of proposed banned turns as well as changes to the amount of pavement space, bus stops and loading provision. The feedback we received locally at the time wasn’t positive with the main concern being related to amendments to local traffic patterns and impacts on local roads. For these reasons, the scheme was not taken forward at that time.
As part of our current design work, we’re considering the feedback received at the time and working to address the concerns raised where we’re able to do so.
Our initial work has indicated that the latest design shows promise, although we have a number of outstanding issues that we’re working through in an iterative process. This will allow us to improve the pedestrian environment whilst minimising the impact to road traffic, particularly buses.
While we refine the initial design work to deliver a workable proposal, we feel that a meeting would be most useful. This would be when we have a design that we feel is in a position to take forward as a viable proposal. However, we’d be happy to meet up to receive your position and hear your views in person."
I'll arrange to meet up with TfL as soon as possible (which is probably after Christmas). My main issues are:-
a) Timescales. This seems to have been moving at snail's pace.
b) Is it really correct that putting a crossing here is complex? Why can't there be an "all green" pedestrian phase on the lights, and otherwise keep the junction as it is?
I'll keep you posted...
