Thank you very much for supporting this petition. We've now got enough support that I'm entitled to present the petition to the Council at a Council Meeting on 7th December (next Thursday).
A local councillor is going to give a speech, presenting the petition, saying:-
“I hardly need to tell people here what a busy pedestrian route Holloway Road is.
This busy junction is very difficult to cross.
Frankly, it is dangerous.
Whilst there are traffic lights for vehicles, there’s no pedestrian crossing over Drayton Park or Palmer Place.
To cross here you have to watch the lights closely, and take your chances, hoping no-one tries to turn as you cross.
It can be difficult to see turning vehicles. Drivers aren’t expecting pedestrians, and drive over the junction fast and aggressively. Some turn without indicating. Others rush through the lights on amber.
It’s even worse for older people, those with children, and people with mobility problems.
I have been overwhelmed by the response to my petition.
Over 1,300 people have signed.
Many have left comments. It’s clear from these there has been at least one accident here.
One person wrote:-
“I once got knocked over here when I was crossing the road. I had to have 10 stitches in my top lip. The car that hit me never even stopped.”
Another said:-
“There are a number of schools around this area. They need to make it safer. I personally nearly had one of my children knocked over at this crossing…”
And some more:-
“I have seen people nearly killed at this crossing many times. It is treacherous!”
And:-
“I live locally… I almost got hit by a car one day”
“My family and I have had a few near misses of being run over”
“Including myself and family, I’ve seen people nearly get run over so many times, as we don’t know when to cross and then drivers get really angry with people trying to cross!”
I understand that Holloway Road is TfL’s responsibility.
I have been told TfL may have some plans to improve pedestrian safety on the whole of Holloway Road.
But this junction can’t wait for improvements to the whole of Holloway Road. These are likely to take years – maybe decades.
This is a single, dangerous, junction, already controlled with traffic lights.
At least one accident has already happened here.
We need a crossing now.
It would be a tragedy if someone gets killed there before a crossing is installed.
Please can Islington lobby as hard as possible for TfL to sort this out.”
