On Friday, July 28th, Davis Imam Ammar Shahin apologized for his controversial speech. [Read] For Qudosi, who drafted the petition and rallied support, the move is disingenuous: "Shahin's war-drum sermon calling for violence shows a rigid Jew-hate, not easily scrubbed. That the entire mosque and board rallied in support of Shahin, shows that only does Shahin need to step down but the entire board must be removed. It was generous of me to focus on only demanding Shahin be fired in the petition for prostitution of faith when in fact the entire community has failed. If you did not stand against this as Muslim, you failed. It's that simple. This is not hard. If you hear someone railing on for a stirring of chaos in an already volatile period, you stand up and you say something. The cowardice from the community cannot be tolerated. The only reason we are hearing an apology is because of the immense pressure applied against the imam and the board. It's one thing if a person slips on their words or makes one statement; this was an entire calculated speech. This was intentionally delivered and then stood behind. It is entirely unacceptable and totally out of order. In the press conference surrounding the Imam's apology, Samira Ali, secretary of the Council of Sacramento Valley Islamic Organization, shared, 'We’re deeply troubled and feel the pain of the Jewish community…The Islamic faith does not condone any harming of an innocent person regardless of their faith.' What the outside community doesn't understand is that for these Muslims, Israel and the Jews are not innocent. So while Ali's statement is correct, the application is entirely misleading. Again, if the community felt Jews were innocent, denouncement against the Imam would have happened at the time of his speech or immediately after."
