2 greyhounds killed at Galway stadium on 15 May

Two greyhounds were killed at Galway stadium on the same day as a member of the public captured sickening footage of a dog being carried away after a race.
Greyhound Racing Ireland statistics, obtained by Paul Murphy TD, show that on 15 May 2026 at the track:
• A greyhound suffered a broken hock and was “euthanised by track vet”
• Another greyhound died of “haemorrhage” (bled to death) in what was described as a “racing fatality”
Video footage filmed at the stadium that day showed a greyhound being carried off the track after Race 1 https://www.youtube.com/shorts/V0Ua_xhnfm0
It is unknown if this greyhound - believed to be Darraghs Fly - was one of the two greyhounds killed. Greyhound Racing Ireland is hiding footage of the race, which the 3-year-old “did not finish”. The name of the greyhound’s owner has been deleted from the GRI website.
Darraghs Fly was used in 33 races between January 2025 and the 15 May race at Galway stadium
GRI is also hiding footage of Race 2 during which greyhound Hanover Solo struck the trackside rail and did not finish. That was the greyhound’s last race and GRI has deleted the owner’s name.
On the day at Galway track, a “fundraising information evening” was held - part of Greyhound Racing Ireland’s shameful attempts to lure underfunded schools and clubs - including junior GAA clubs - to their gambling venues where dogs suffer and die. The special guest was former Kerry GAA player Paul Galvin.
In an appeal to Mr Galvin to disassociate from greyhound racing, we pointed out that at Galway stadium over the past 11 years, at least 236 greyhounds suffered injuries and 81 died or were killed by a track vet. This includes 16 injuries and 11 deaths in 2025. He has been also been told about the latest two dogs who were killed there.
Greyhound racing is responsible for so much suffering and death that Greyhound Action Ireland, Dogs Trust Ireland, the NSPCA and many other animal welfare groups want it ended The NSPCA has highlighted "the appalling animal welfare and export issues linked with the greyhound industry" and raised concerns about "the welfare of greyhounds and that includes before, during and after their racing lives".
At races around Ireland since 2014, at least 4,133 greyhounds suffered injuries and 1,648 were killed. The Greyhound Racing Ireland figures are based on “reported” injuries and deaths, suggesting that the actual number could be even higher. They do not include the greyhounds injured at tracks and later killed elsewhere, or the thousands of greyhounds who are killed every year because they are not fast enough to win races.
The full horrors of greyhound racing were exposed in the award-winning “RTE Investigates: Greyhounds running for their lives” documentary. This revealed that thousands of greyhounds are killed behind the scenes every year simply because they are not fast enough. It included disturbing footage of dogs being delivered to a knackery where they were shot in the head and dumped in a skip. One shot dog was seen writhing on the ground in agony as his merciless owner drove away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM
