The owner of a greyhound who tested positive for Naproxen has been fined just €150.
According to the latest Greyhound Racing Control Committee report (April 2026), the prohibited substance was detected in a urine sample taken from Ballyroyal Nate at Dundalk track on 23 August 2025. On the day, the greyhound finished 5th in a race.
Greyhound owner William Mullan of 42 Glendara, Derry, Co. Derry - was not in attendance at a meeting of the control committee.
The meeting "noted the evidence given by Mr. William Mullan in the Investigation Report Form where he admitted to being in breach of the regulations and was not challenging the sampling process or the laboratory findings and that he advised the Committee he administered 250mg of an anti-inflammatory tablet three or four days before the race to ease symptoms of discomfort Ballyroyal Nate was showing believing it would have left the greyhounds system prior to the race.”
It added that “Mr Mullan did not name the tablet that was administered which did not help the Committee in having all the evidence.”
The Greyhound Racing Control Committee "imposed a sanction payment of €150 on Mr. Mullan and cautioned him on his future conduct and awarded costs of €250 in favour of Rásaíocht Con Éireann"
Since 23 August 2025, Ballyroyal Nate has been used in 8 races, the last one being on 31 January 2026 at Lifford track.
The Greyhound Racing Ireland website shows that William Mullan has had 1,010 Recorded Race Entries and 182 winners.
His profile page lists 21 “recently raced greyhounds currently owned by Mr Willie Mullan”.
