Nearly half a million euros to home 65 dogs. In the latest shocking greyhound racing-related revelation, it has emerged that taxpayer-funded Greyhound Racing Ireland has paid out a massive €488,000 to two “care homes” to home just 65 greyhounds. That’s an average cost of €7,507 to home each dog.
Speaking on KFM Radio on 29 May 2025, Nuala Donlon of Greyhound Action Ireland outlined that the GRI’s expenditure on homing the dogs far exceeds the amount spent by animal rescue groups in homing dogs. For example, Deel Sighthound Rescue in Limerick - a small privately-run group - received a €15,600 grant in the last budget and managed to rehome 143 dogs, including 23 ex-racing greyhounds.
Nuala pointed out that the greyhound industry is “breeding thousands of dogs that are surplus to requirements every year”. Despite this and all the associated cruelty and killing, Greyhound Racing Ireland continues to receive huge government grants each year, including €19.82 million for 2025.
“Funding greyhound racing is an outrageous waste of public money,” Nuala stated. “They talk about increased welfare standards and so on but last year was their worst year for track deaths - it was an increase of 51% on 2023. If they’re telling us that they’re increasing all this taxpayers’ money to improve welfare and we can see with our own eyes that statistics are showing that welfare is getting worse, then certainly the Minister for Agriculture [who approved the funding] has questions to ask.”

ACTION ALERT
Don’t go greyhound racing. Please join us in urging the government to STOP the massive grants that are propping up this dog-killing gambling activity. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
