An Irish greyhound who was found straying “in a dreadful condition” in the UK six weeks ago, has died.
Greyhound Protection UK reported that 9-year-old Sweep “had a massive seizure and didn’t come out of it”.
The greyhound, who was used in racing under the name “GETOFFTHEBUS”, was rescued from a pound last month. Just three weeks ago, he was rehomed and “found his happy place and loved his family”.
His rescuers say that when he was picked up from the dog pound, “he was in a dreadful condition with horrific infected nails”.
“We had to take him to the vet to get him sedated as his nail bed was infected,” Greyhound Protection UK outlined. “He had all his nails sorted and a dental as well as full bloods.” https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=900289825468355&set=pcb.900291482134856
The group added that they “got him to the beach the day he was adopted and he loved it”.
Sadly, however, his happiness was to be short-lived.
GETOFFTHEBUS / Sweep is one of many victims of cruel greyhound racing.
The Greyhound Racing Ireland website shows that he was born in November 2014 and was used in two trials at Galway Stadium on 3rd and 10th February 2016. His final appearance at an Irish track was at a sales auction at Thurles stadium later that month. He was sold after a bid of €200. From there, he ended up in the UK.
Between 30 September 2016 and 10 July 2018, he was used in 46 races at Swindon track. It is unknown what happened to him between July 2018 and when he was picked up by a dog warden six years later.
