A greyhound owner and trainer who blamed "tea and toast" for the presence of prohibited substances in a dog has been fined a paltry €100.
A detection of Caffeine & Theobromine was made in a urine sample taken from 1-year-old greyhound Seeger Sessions on 19th May 2023 at Dundalk stadium.
On the day, Seeger Sessions finished third in a race. He has been used in seven more races since then, between 10 June and 27 October 2023.
In a greyhound racing control committee report, published on the website of Greyhound Racing Ireland, the committee noted that "the evidence given by Colm Farrelly of Slieve Road, Knockagh, Hackballcross, Dundalk, Co. Louth that the only explanation he could offer for the adverse analytical finding was that members of the household gave the greyhound tea and toast prior to the race".
Farrelly “said he was happy with the sampling process, and he was not challenging the subsequent laboratory finding”.
The Greyhound Racing Control Committee concluded that having considered all the evidence, it was "satisfied that the case presented by Rasaiocht Con Eireann [Greyhound Racing Ireland] was proven".
It "acknowledged the level of co-operation received from Mr Farrelly" and fined him just €100. The prize money of €35 won by the greyhound Seeger Sessions in the race was forfeited.
Seeger Sessions is among a growing number of greyhounds testing positive for prohibited substances around Ireland. Find out more at

ACTION ALERT
Don’t go greyhound racing. Please join us in urging the government to STOP the massive grants that are propping up this cruel, dog-killing gambling activity. Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland has received €347 million in funding, including €17.6 million for 2022, €18.2 million for 2023 and €19 million for 2024. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
Urge the leaders of Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, the Green Party and Sinn Fein to stop supporting this funding.
