Green Party TD Brian Leddin has highlighted the cruelty, killing and doping in greyhound racing in Ireland.
In a 13 July 2023 speech in Dail Eireann, he also noted the shameful export of Irish greyhounds to China and Pakistan.
Addressing the Minister for Agriculture, the Limerick City TD referred to the “concerns of the public, to put it mildly, when it comes to the greyhound industry and what has been revealed in the last number of years with respect to greyhounds that are killed annually because they are not fast enough to make it on the track, dogs being killed because they get injured, the widespread use of banned substances to improve performance of greyhounds - also, export of greyhounds to countries such as China and Pakistan where little or no laws exist to protect these dogs.”
In 2021 and 2022, Deputy Leddin and his Green Party colleagues voted in favour of €17.6 million / €18.2 million in government funding to greyhound racing. This despite a commitment in the Green Party manifesto that it would phase out public funding to greyhound racing.

Since 2001, over €328 million in funding has been handed over to Greyhound Racing Ireland, including €19.2 million for 2021, €17.6 million for 2022 and €18.2 million for 2023. It’s time for politicians to stop the funding and allow unpopular greyhound racing to die a death.
