A greyhound suffered VERY SEVERE INJURIES and was killed at Shelbourne Park Stadium on 15 July, it has emerged.
The greyhound named Kane Tashadelek was one of four dogs injured in a single race at the Dublin track on the day. His injuries were considered so bad that a track vet opted to kill him.
Greyhound Racing Ireland confirmed the injuries and death following a query from a member of the public.
“Greyhound Kane Tashadelek unfortunately sustained very severe injuries and was euthanised on the night due to their extent,” a spokesperson stated.
The other three greyhounds “sustained minor injuries and will, in the opinion of the attending veterinarian, race again in the near future.” They were identified as Guappo Chico, Millridge Nadia and Endova Finale.
Greyhound Racing Ireland is hiding footage of the race but a record of the race on its website shows that 2-year-old Kane Tashadelek was knocked over and “did not finish”. It was his 16th race and the prizemoney is listed as €20.
Two of the other greyhounds who were injured - Millridge Nadia and Endova Finale – were also knocked over and did not register finishing times either. The fourth greyhound, Guappo Chico, finished third.
On the same day at Shelbourne Park, greyhound Drumkeen Mike was badly baulked at the first bend in Race 1 and "did not finish" (suggesting an injury). The fate of this greyhound is unknown. Greyhound Racing Ireland has also withheld the video footage of that race.
Kane Tashadelek, Guappo Chico, Millridge Nadia and Endova Finale are the latest in a growing list of victims at Shelbourne Park stadium.
At least 278 greyhounds suffered injuries there and 73 died or were killed by a track vet over the past eight years alone, sickening Greyhound Racing Ireland statistics show. Among the victims are a greyhound who died after suffering a ‘severe fracture of the neck’, another who collapsed and died with a ‘haemorrhage into the abdomen from a rupture of the aorta’, a greyhound who died of a heart attack after a race and another who was carried away bleeding with a leg bone popped out.
The injuries and deaths have continued in 2023. In the first four months of this year, Shelbourne Park was the worst track for injuries/deaths. 12 greyhounds suffered injuries and 7 of them lost their lives (six were killed by a track vet and there was one additional “racing fatality”).
They were among 81 greyhounds injured and 44 killed in racing between January and April 2023. This brings to 3,131 the number of greyhounds known to have been injured and 1,104 the number killed in racing at Irish tracks since 2014.
ACTION ALERT
Don’t go greyhound racing. Please join us in urging the government to STOP the massive grants that are propping up this cruel, dog-killing gambling activity. Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland has received €328 million in funding, including €19.2 million for 2021, €17.6 million for 2022 and €18.2 million for 2023. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
